First World War Thurnscoe

The Hill Primary School, Thurnscoe have received resource packs about 10 men of the village who fought in the First World War.
We helped the school apply for an HLF Sharing Heritage grant to discover men of the village who fought during the war. The aim is to make the First World War relevant to children living in the village today.
Year 6 pupils of The Hill and neighbouring Gooseacre will visit the village war memorial and Experience Barnsley then receive war poem workshops from poet Matt Black. We have researched and produced the resource packs for the pupils. There is a pack for each man containing his family’s census records, maps of the local area, newspaper reports and military records. Each pack is accompanied by teacher’s notes to guide the class teacher through the documents and to point to online resources.

The project will conclude in the spring with pupil-created exhibitions that will go on display in the schools and the local library. Pupils from each school will visit the other to share what they have learnt.
The packs are brilliant! Thank you so much.
