inHeritage News 03/11/06 Doncaster Museum launch for Romans on the Don

The Romans are returning to Doncaster almost 2,000 years after they first invaded Britain. But this time it is a very friendly invasion by the Vicus, the nationally famous Roman Britain living history society, who are turning the foyer and galleries of Doncaster Museum into a living Romano-British village on Saturday 18 th November. Visitors to the museum will be able to see and talk to Romano-British people dressed in period costume, demonstrating crafts typical of Roman Britain including metalworking, weaving and wood working. There will also be a couple of Roman legionaries on hand to keep things in order and show their weapons and armour.

The event is free and will be taking place between 10.00 am and 4.00pm. There will be lots of activities for children and an illustrated talk starting at 3.00pm. The Museum will be getting out some of the Roman objects from their collection which have not been on public display for decades specially for the launch. Visitors will also have the rare opportunity to explore real Roman artefacts with hands on handling sessions.

The event launches the ‘Romans on the Don’ booklet and website. These tell the story of life in the Doncaster area using artefacts and information gathered from over 15 years of archaeological excavations on the many sand, gravel and stone quarries of the area. The new booklet is free and will be available on the day at the museum. The website is hosted on Doncaster Council’s website at www.doncaster.gov.uk/romansonthedon. Both are beautifully illustrated with specially commissioned colour reconstruction drawings of many of the known Roman sites including houses, pottery kilns and Rossington Roman fort. There is also a teachers’ pack on the website for use by Doncaster’s history teachers.

The event is part of the ‘Romans on the Don’ project, funded by the English Heritage Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund. The project brings together the expertise of the Sheffield based interpretation specialists inHeritage, South Yorkshire Archaeology Service (advisers to Doncaster Council) and Doncaster Museum.

Dinah Saich, South Yorkshire County Archaeologist, said ‘it is great to have the chance to show people what we have learnt from excavations - how the area would have looked 2000 years ago, and the ways in which people adapted to the arrival of the Romans’.

Bill Bevan of inHeritage said ‘Romans on the Don is bringing alive the results of archaeological excavations for the benefit of local people.’
